Remodel 2

Now that we have come to a significant stopping place, I've had some time to post the updates on the living room project.

Tuesday we finished putting up the drywall.

cutting out the outlets

Our friend Pat came over an helped us out throughout the week with the layers of joint compound.

Signs of Spring - Easter weekend
These lovely daffodils seemed to pop up overnight.

Nick got rid of a couple overgrown bushes in the front of the house.

Lilac buds (and Nick ripping out bushes)

Last year's chives returned

Lilies

Oregano

The walls were finally ready for primer on Friday night.

Aladdin has been a little displaced and concerned during our reno. This is his "concerned" look.

Saturday morning - 2 weeks from the beginning of our demo, saw the start of the painting - ceiling & walls

Saturday night, around 10:00p, Nick and I decided we still had time to get the carpet out. Aladdin decided he wanted to be involved.

Hallelujah! Hardwood!

Sunday - Nick put in the ceiling fan and I scrubbed the floors before the furniture came back in.

Sunday afternoon break for Reuben sandwiches. Delicious!

Furniture back in place for Sunday afternoon/evening snack and hockey lounging.
We are feeling pretty good settling back into our places

Stay tuned for updates on the new front door, and baseboards/molding (which might be tricky since our walls are 1/2 an inch thinner, and no longer line up with the windows or the new floor)

Spring Cleaning!?!

When the warm weather finally comes around, and we begin to open our windows and doors, many people get the urge to purge and scour their house to prepare for the upcoming good weather.
We are purging in a totally different (rather dusty) way.

Back in September, I started patching up a hole in the wall left from our futon. an hour later, the wall looked like this. EVERYTHING just kept crumbling off! There were so many layers on the walls.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed, we patched it up temporarily and made plans for a living room overhaul in the spring. Conveniently, Nick called all the guys and they planned to start the demo work on a weekend I would be out of town. :-)

WHEN WE MOVED IN:

PRE-DEMO

It's Coming Down!

Turns out there was a 1/2 inch layer of plaster over the drywall. Also, no insulation in the outside walls, but insulation in the ceiling, between the first and second floor.

Shoveling the mess out of the living room.

They put the garbage bin underneath the window and dropped it out from there!

The boys found a bunch of puzzle pieces and small toys when they were pulling down the ceiling.

Sunday: Nick's dad came over to help with the electrical. They added 4 outlets inside, one outside, and four ceiling lights.

Monday: Insulation and beginning drywall on the ceiling.

(These are both from Monday - I changed once I realized how uncomfortable the dust from the fiberglass insulation can be once it gets into your skin. I figured long sleeves and thicker pants might help a little.)

We even got a couple pieces of drywall up before we ran out. Back to the store tomorrow, then back to work! Stay tuned for updates!
